About North Captiva

North Captiva Island Map

Much like most of the gulf coast Florida areas, North Captiva is dominated by mangroves and white sand beaches. Within the confines of the Pine Island Aquatic Preserve, the island is home to full time residents human and non human. The island is about four miles long and almost a mile wide at the air strip. In-between Captiva and Cayo Costa, It was connected to the mainland via Captiva but was separated by the Hurricane of 1921. In its wake Red Fish pass was created. The island features a sprawling state park that encompasses the south end. The park is maintained by the Cayo Costa State park, which is the island to the north. Although there is power and running water, cars are something you wont see when you visit the island. Electric vehicles such as golf carts are the main mode of transportation. The island also is host to one of the few active island run ways,  small planes occasionally land and take off from the short strip. Only accessible by boat, water taxis or ferry are the only way to get to the island. However the lack of accessibility gives North Captiva a small island feel and allows those that choose to visit the chance to unwind and unplug.
